yadi mam apratikaram ashastram shastra-panayah, dhartarashtra rane hanyus tan me kshemataram bhavet
Arjuna says it would be better for him if the sons of Dhritarashtra, with weapons in hand, were to kill him in battle while he remains unresisting and unarmed. This verse reaches the nadir of Arjuna's despair — passive death appears preferable to active fulfillment of his warrior's duty. Yet this very depth of crisis will make him receptive to Krishna's transformative teachings.
- •The deepest spiritual teachings arise precisely at the point of our greatest helplessness
- •Preferring passive suffering to active duty is not the same as true non-violence or surrender
- •Rock-bottom despair, when surrendered to the divine teacher, becomes the soil for wisdom
Sanjaya uvaca: Evam uktva arjunah sankhye rathopastha upavishat, visrijya sa-sharam capam shoka-samvigna-manasah
Having spoken thus, Arjuna cast aside his bow and arrows and sat down on the chariot seat, his mind overwhelmed with grief.
- •Even warriors face moments of despair
- •Emotional overwhelm is human
- •The need for divine guidance in crisis
Mayi sarvani karmani sannyasyadhyatma-cetasa, nirashir nirmamo bhutva yudhyasva vigata-jvarah
Therefore, surrendering all your works unto Me, with mind intent on the self, free from desire and possessiveness, and cured of mental fever, fight.
- •Surrender all actions to the divine
- •Act without personal agenda
- •Freedom from mental anxiety
Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham, mama vartmanuvartante manushyah partha sarvashah
In whatever way people surrender unto Me, I reciprocate accordingly. Everyone follows My path, knowingly or unknowingly, O son of Pritha.
- •God responds to all approaches
- •Divine reciprocity with devotees
- •All paths ultimately lead to the same source
Brahmany adhaya karmani sangam tyaktva karoti yah, lipyate na sa papena padma-patram ivambhasa
One who performs their duty without attachment, surrendering the results to the Supreme, is unaffected by sinful action, as the lotus leaf is untouched by water.
- •Detached action purifies the soul
- •Like a lotus in water, be in the world but not of it
- •Surrender leads to freedom
Etan me samsayam krishna chettum arhasy asheshatah, tvad-anyah samsayasyasya chetta na hy upapadyate
Only You, O Krishna, are capable of completely resolving this doubt of mine; no one else is fit to dispel this doubt. Arjuna's complete reliance on Krishna for the dispelling of spiritual doubt is a model of the surrender that enables genuine teaching to occur.
- •The guru is the only one who can truly resolve deep spiritual doubts
- •Complete surrender to the teacher opens the channel of wisdom
- •Acknowledging one's uncertainty is a sign of readiness to learn
Shri bhagavan uvaca: Mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan mad-ashrayah, asamsayam samagram mam yatha jnasyasi tac chrinu
The Supreme Lord said: O son of Partha, hear how you shall know Me fully and without doubt, with your mind fixed on Me, taking refuge in Me, and practicing yoga with devotion. This verse opens the chapter by promising complete knowledge of the Divine through devoted practice and surrender.
- •Fixing the mind on God is the foundation of spiritual knowledge
- •Taking refuge in the Divine removes all doubt
- •Complete knowledge of God is attainable through devoted yoga
Daivi hy esha guna-mayi mama maya duratyaya, mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te
This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who surrender unto Me can easily cross beyond it.
- •Material nature is a powerful illusion
- •Surrender to God overcomes maya
- •Grace transcends our limitations
Bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate, vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma su-durlabhah
After many births and deaths, one with true knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.
- •Spiritual evolution takes many lifetimes
- •True knowledge leads to surrender
- •Recognizing the ultimate reality is rare
Tasmāt sarveṣu kāleṣu mām anusmara yudhya ca, mayy arpita-mano-buddhir mām evaiṣyasy asanśayaḥ
Therefore, remember Me at all times and fight. With mind and intellect surrendered to Me, you will certainly attain Me.
- •Constant remembrance amid action
- •Balance devotion with duty
- •Surrender ensures divine union
Shubhashubha-phalair evam mokshyase karma-bandhanais, sannyasa-yoga-yuktatma vimukto mam upaisyasi
In this way, you shall be freed from the bondage of actions and their good and evil results. With your mind fixed on renunciation and yoga, you shall come to Me. Dedicating all actions to God through yoga of renunciation dissolves karmic bondage and leads to union with the Supreme.
- •Offering all actions to God frees one from karmic results
- •Both good and bad karma bind the soul; transcend both through devotion
- •Yoga of renunciation combined with surrender leads to liberation
Sarvam etad ritam manye yan mam vadasi keshava, na hi te bhagavan vyaktim vidur deva na danavah
O Keshava, I accept as truth everything You have told me. Neither gods nor demons, O Lord, know Your manifestation. Arjuna's complete acceptance of Krishna's teaching marks genuine surrender — he does not require further proof because his heart has been opened by the Lord's wisdom.
- •Genuine acceptance of divine teaching is itself a form of spiritual surrender
- •The Lord's divine nature surpasses the knowledge of both gods and demons
- •Faith rooted in wisdom is stronger than intellectual demand for proof
Ye tu sarvani karmani mayi sannyasya mat-parah, ananyenaiva yogena mam dhyayanta upasate
But those who worship Me, surrendering all their activities to Me and devoted to Me without deviation, meditating on Me with exclusive yoga...
- •Complete surrender of all actions
- •Exclusive devotion to God
- •Single-pointed meditation
Tatah padam tat parimargitavyam yasmin gata na nivartanti bhuyah, tam eva cadyam purusham prapadye yatah pravrttih prasrta purani
One must seek that supreme abode from which, having gone, one never returns. There one should surrender to that Primal Person from whom everything has emanated since time immemorial. This verse describes the goal of spiritual practice — the ultimate liberation from the cycle of birth and death by taking refuge in the Supreme.
- •The supreme abode of liberation is the ultimate goal of human life
- •Surrendering to the Primal Person is the means of reaching that abode
- •Liberation means freedom from the cycle of repeated birth and death
cetasa sarva-karmani mayi sannyasya mat-parah buddhi-yogam upasritya mac-cittah satatam bhava
Mentally renouncing all actions in me, regarding me as the supreme goal, resorting to buddhi yoga, fix your consciousness on me always. Krishna integrates surrendered action with the yoga of intellect and sustained God-consciousness.
- •Mental surrender of all actions to Krishna is the essence of karma-sannyasa
- •Buddhi yoga — the yoga of intelligence — supports sustained divine consciousness
- •Constant God-consciousness is both the means and the goal of the path
Mac-chittah sarva-durgani mat-prasadat tarishyasi, atha cet tvam ahankaran na shroshyasi vinankshyasi
If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace. But if you do not work in such consciousness, but act through ego, you will be lost.
- •Divine consciousness overcomes all obstacles
- •Grace flows to those who surrender
- •Ego leads to bondage
Tam eva śharaṇaṁ gachchha sarva-bhāvena bhārata, tat-prasādāt parāṁ śhāntim sthānaṁ prāpsyasi śhāśhvatam
Surrender exclusively unto Him with your whole being, O Bharata. By His grace, you will attain supreme peace and the eternal abode.
- •Complete surrender to God
- •Surrender with entire being
- •Grace brings supreme peace
Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam sharanam vraja, aham tvam sarva-papebhyo mokshayishyami ma shuchah
Abandon all varieties of dharmas and simply surrender unto Me alone. I shall liberate you from all sinful reactions; do not fear.
- •Ultimate teaching: complete surrender
- •Divine grace liberates from all karma
- •Let go of fear and trust completely
