Sri bhagavan uvaca: idam tu te guhyatamam pravakshyamy anasuyave, jnanam vijnana-sahitam yaj jnatva mokshyase 'shubhat

The Supreme Lord said: Because you are free from envy, I shall impart to you this most secret wisdom combined with direct realisation. Knowing this, you shall be freed from all misfortune. This royal knowledge is the highest purifier and is directly perceivable by experience.

Key Teachings

  • The highest wisdom is given only to the non-envious
  • Jnana (knowledge) and vijnana (direct experience) must go together
  • This supreme knowledge liberates one from all inauspiciousness
Raja-vidya raja-guhyam pavitram idam uttamam, pratyakshavagamam dharmyam su-sukham kartum avyayam

This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest knowledge, directly experienced, righteous, easy to practice, and everlasting.

Key Teachings

  • This is the highest knowledge
  • Direct experience validates truth
  • Spiritual practice can be joyful
Ashraddadhanah purusha dharmasyasya parantapa, aprapya mam nivartante mrityu-samsara-vartmani

Those who lack faith in this dharma, O Parantapa, do not attain Me; they return to the path of birth and death in this mortal world. Without inner conviction in the supreme teaching, the soul remains bound to the cycle of transmigration.

Key Teachings

  • Shraddha (faith) is essential to walk the spiritual path
  • Lack of faith perpetuates the cycle of samsara
  • The path to God requires sincere inner conviction
Maya tatam idam sarvam jagad avyakta-murtina, mat-sthani sarva-bhutani na chaham teshv avasthitah

I pervade this entire universe in My unmanifest form. All beings exist in Me, but I am not limited to them.

Key Teachings

  • Divine presence in all things
  • God transcends creation while pervading it
  • The mystery of immanence and transcendence
Na ca mat-sthani bhutani pashya me yogam aishvaram, bhuta-bhrn na ca bhuta-stho mamatma bhuta-bhavanah

And yet beings do not rest in Me — behold My divine mystery! My Self, which sustains all beings and brings them into existence, does not actually dwell in them. Just as the mighty wind, blowing everywhere, always rests in space, so do all beings rest in Me.

Key Teachings

  • God sustains creation without being confined by it
  • The divine is both immanent and transcendent simultaneously
  • Understanding divine mystery requires contemplative perception
Yathakasha-sthito nityam vayuh sarvatra-go mahan, tatha sarvani bhutani mat-sthanity upadharaya

Just as the mighty wind, moving everywhere, ever rests in the sky, so know that all beings rest in Me. The analogy of wind and sky illustrates how the Lord holds all existence within Himself without being touched or limited by that existence.

Key Teachings

  • All creation dwells in God as wind dwells in the sky
  • God is the substratum of all that exists
  • Diversity of creation does not diminish divine unity
Sarva-bhutani kaunteya prakritim yanti mamikam, kalpa-kshaye punas tani kalpadau visrijamy aham

At the end of a cosmic cycle, O son of Kunti, all beings merge into My nature, and at the beginning of the next cycle I send them forth again. This describes the universal rhythm of creation and dissolution driven by the Lord's divine nature and will.

Key Teachings

  • Cosmic creation and dissolution follow God's divine cycles
  • All beings return to the Lord at the end of each kalpa
  • The Lord is both the origin and destination of all existence
Prakritim svam avashtabhya visrijami punah punah, bhuta-gramam imam kritsnam avasham prakriter vashah

Animating My own material nature, I project forth again and again this entire multitude of beings, which are helpless by their own nature. The Lord creates not out of necessity but as an expression of His divine energy, with all beings operating under the laws of prakriti.

Key Teachings

  • Creation is driven by the Lord's divine energy (prakriti)
  • Living beings are subject to the laws of material nature
  • God is the master controller of all cosmic projections
Na ca mam tani karmani nibadhnanti dhananjaya, udasina-vad asinam asaktam teshu karmasu

These acts of creation do not bind Me, O Dhananjaya. I remain like one sitting apart, unattached to these actions. The Lord acts through His nature but is never affected by karma, illustrating the perfect freedom that comes from desireless, ego-free action.

Key Teachings

  • God acts without attachment and is never bound by karma
  • True freedom comes from action without personal investment
  • The Lord's detachment is the ultimate model for spiritual action
Mayadhyakshena prakritih suyate sa-caracaram, hetunanena kaunteya jagad viparivartate

Under My supervision, material nature (prakriti) produces all moving and unmoving things. By reason of this, O son of Kunti, the world revolves. The Lord is the supreme overseer who directs nature's activity while remaining uninvolved — the witness consciousness behind all phenomena.

Key Teachings

  • The Lord is the supreme witness and overseer of all creation
  • Prakriti acts under divine supervision, not independently
  • All movement in creation is sustained by God's guiding presence
Avajananti mam mudha manushim tanum ashritam, param bhavam ajananto mama bhuta-maheshvaram

Fools disregard Me when I descend in human form. They do not know My transcendental nature as the Supreme Lord of all beings. Those who see only the external human appearance of the Lord miss His divine majesty hidden within the mortal form.

Key Teachings

  • The divine is often unrecognised when it appears in human form
  • Ignorance of God's supreme nature leads to disrespect
  • True wisdom perceives the transcendental beyond the apparent
Moghasah mogha-karmano mogha-jnana vicetasah, rakshasim asurim caiva prakritim mohinim shritah

Those who are bewildered are possessed of vain hopes, vain actions, and vain knowledge. They harbour a deluding nature that is demoniac and godless. Such persons, lacking genuine wisdom and devotion, pursue goals that lead only to frustration because they are built on illusion.

Key Teachings

  • Actions and knowledge without God-consciousness are ultimately fruitless
  • A demoniac nature is characterised by delusion and false pride
  • True purpose requires alignment with the divine
Mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakritim ashritah, bhajanty ananya-manaso jnatva bhutadim avyayam

O Partha, great souls who take shelter of the divine nature worship Me with undivided consciousness, knowing Me as the imperishable origin of all beings.

Key Teachings

  • Great souls have undivided devotion
  • Divine nature brings spiritual vision
  • Knowledge of God as origin of all
Satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas cha dridha-vratah, namasyantas cha mam bhaktya nitya-yukta upasate

Always chanting My glories, endeavoring with determination, and bowing down to Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion.

Key Teachings

  • Constant practice of devotion
  • Determination in spiritual life
  • Multiple forms of worship
Jnana-yajnena capy anye yajanto mam upasate, ekatvena prithaktvena bahudha vishvato-mukham

Others worship Me through the sacrifice of knowledge, seeing Me as one without a second, or as distinct from themselves, or in many forms facing in all directions. Different spiritual paths and perspectives all converge on the same Supreme Reality, each valid within its own framework.

Key Teachings

  • Multiple valid paths lead to the same Supreme Reality
  • The sacrifice of knowledge (jnana-yajna) is a form of worship
  • Unity and diversity are both valid ways of perceiving God
Aham kratur aham yajnah svadhahám aham aushadham, mantro 'ham aham evajyam aham agnir aham hutam

I am the ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering to the ancestors, I am the healing herb, I am the mantra, I am the clarified butter, I am the fire, and I am the act of offering. Krishna declares Himself to be the substance, the means, and the goal of all spiritual practice.

Key Teachings

  • God is present in every element of spiritual practice and ritual
  • The means and the end of worship are both divine
  • All sacred acts are ultimately an expression of the Supreme
Pitaham asya jagato mata dhata pitamahah, vedyam pavitram omkar riksama yajur eva ca

I am the father, mother, sustainer and grandfather of this universe, the object of knowledge, the purifier, the syllable Om, and the Rig, Sama and Yajur Vedas. The Lord reveals Himself as the cosmic parent and the very foundation of all scriptural knowledge.

Key Teachings

  • God is the cosmic parent — father, mother, and grandfather of creation
  • The sacred syllable Om is a direct expression of the Divine
  • All Vedic wisdom ultimately points to and originates from the Lord
Gatir bharta prabhuh sakshi nivasah sharanam suhrit, prabhavah pralayah sthanam nidhanam bijam avyayam

I am the goal, sustainer, master, witness, abode, shelter, and friend. I am the creation and destruction, the basis of everything, the resting place, and the eternal seed.

Key Teachings

  • God is everything to the devotee
  • Divine in all roles and relationships
  • Complete dependence on the divine
Tapamy aham aham varsham nigrihnamy utsrijami ca, amritam caiva mrityush ca sad asac caham arjuna

I give heat, I withhold and send forth rain. I am immortality and I am also death; I am being and non-being, O Arjuna. The Lord is the totality of all opposites — the principle that underlies all dualities and encompasses the full range of cosmic phenomena.

Key Teachings

  • God encompasses all opposites — life and death, being and non-being
  • Natural phenomena like rain and heat are direct expressions of divine will
  • Transcending duality means recognising the Lord in all contrasts
Trai-vidya mam soma-pah puta-papa yajnair ishtva svar-gatim prarthayante, te punyam asadya surendra-lokam ashnanti divyan divi deva-bhogan

Those who study the Vedas, drink soma juice, and worship Me through sacrifices with the desire to go to heaven, attain the holy world of Indra. There they enjoy divine pleasures. Those motivated by worldly or heavenly rewards reach temporary realms of enjoyment but not final liberation.

Key Teachings

  • Vedic rituals performed for heavenly rewards yield only temporary results
  • Desire-driven worship leads to impermanent destinations
  • True liberation requires going beyond the pursuit of heavenly pleasures
Te tam bhuktva svarga-lokam vishalam kshine punye martya-lokam vishanti, evam trayi-dharmam anuprapanna gatagatam kama-kama labhante

After enjoying that vast heavenly realm, when their accumulated merit is exhausted, they return to the mortal world. Thus those who seek enjoyment through the Vedic rituals go and come back, driven by desire. Without desireless devotion, the soul remains caught in the cycle of ascent and descent.

Key Teachings

  • All temporary heavens are eventually left behind when merit is exhausted
  • Desire perpetuates the cycle of repeated birth and death
  • Only desireless worship of God grants permanent liberation
Ananya-chintayanto mam ye janah paryupasate, tesham nityabhiyuktanam yoga-kshemam vahamy aham

To those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.

Key Teachings

  • Divine grace supports sincere devotees
  • Constant devotion attracts divine help
  • Faith and dedication are rewarded
Ye 'py anya-devata-bhakta yajante shraddhayanvitah, te 'pi mam eva kaunteya yajanty avidhi-purvakam

Even those who are devotees of other gods and worship them with faith — they too worship Me alone, O son of Kunti, but they do so in the wrong way. All genuine worship ultimately reaches the Supreme, though those who worship lesser gods do so without the complete understanding of divine unity.

Key Teachings

  • All sincere worship ultimately reaches the one Supreme Reality
  • Worshipping lesser deities is acceptable but incomplete in method
  • Highest devotion requires recognising the Supreme as the ultimate goal
Aham hi sarva-yajnanam bhokta ca prabhur eva ca, na tu mam abhijananti tattvenatas cyavanti te

I alone am the enjoyer and the Lord of all sacrifices. But those who do not know My true nature fall down. The Lord is the ultimate recipient of all spiritual offerings; failing to know this leads to an incomplete path and prevents the worshipper from reaching the highest goal.

Key Teachings

  • The Lord is the supreme recipient of all forms of worship
  • Ignorance of God's true nature leads to spiritual downfall
  • Correct understanding of the Supreme is essential for lasting progress
Yanti deva-vrata devan pitrin yanti pitri-vratah, bhutani yanti bhutejya yanti mad-yajino 'pi mam

Those who worship the demigods go to the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship spirits go to spirits; and those who worship Me will come to Me. The destination of a soul mirrors the object of its deepest devotion and worship.

Key Teachings

  • Your ultimate destination reflects what you truly worship
  • Devotion to the Supreme leads to the supreme destination
  • Different objects of worship yield correspondingly different results
Patram pushpam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati, tad aham bhakty-upahritam ashnami prayatatmanah

If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water, I will accept it.

Key Teachings

  • Sincerity matters more than material value
  • Love transforms simple offerings
  • Divine accepts devotion, not wealth
Yat karoshi yad ashnasi yaj juhoshi dadasi yat, yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kurusva mad-arpanam

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer, whatever you give, whatever austerity you perform—do that as an offering to Me.

Key Teachings

  • Transform all actions into worship
  • Dedicate every activity to the divine
  • Life becomes sacred through intention
Shubhashubha-phalair evam mokshyase karma-bandhanais, sannyasa-yoga-yuktatma vimukto mam upaisyasi

In this way, you shall be freed from the bondage of actions and their good and evil results. With your mind fixed on renunciation and yoga, you shall come to Me. Dedicating all actions to God through yoga of renunciation dissolves karmic bondage and leads to union with the Supreme.

Key Teachings

  • Offering all actions to God frees one from karmic results
  • Both good and bad karma bind the soul; transcend both through devotion
  • Yoga of renunciation combined with surrender leads to liberation
Samo 'ham sarva-bhuteshu na me dveshyo 'sti na priyah, ye bhajanti tu mam bhaktya mayi te teshu chapy aham

I am equal to all beings; none is hateful or dear to Me. But those who worship Me with devotion are in Me, and I am in them.

Key Teachings

  • God's impartial love for all
  • Devotion creates intimacy
  • We find God when we seek Him
Api chet suduracharo bhajate mam ananya-bhak, sadhur eva sa mantavyah samyag vyavasito hi sah

Even if someone commits the most abominable actions, if they worship Me with exclusive devotion, they are to be considered saintly, for they have made the proper resolve.

Key Teachings

  • Sincere devotion transcends past sins
  • Right intention is transformative
  • God accepts all who turn to Him
Kshipram bhavati dharmatma shashvac-chantim nigacchati, kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranashyati

Quickly they become righteous and attain lasting peace. O son of Kunti, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes.

Key Teachings

  • Devotees transform quickly
  • Lasting peace is assured
  • Divine protection is certain
Mam hi partha vyapashritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah, striyo vaishyas tatha shudras te 'pi yanti param gatim

O Partha, even those who are born of sinful wombs — women, merchants (vaishyas), and labourers (shudras) — by taking refuge in Me, they too attain the supreme destination. Devotion transcends all social categories; the path of surrender to God is open to every soul regardless of birth or status.

Key Teachings

  • Bhakti transcends all social and birth-based distinctions
  • Refuge in God is the universal path available to all souls
  • The highest destination is accessible to every sincere devotee
Kim punar brahmanah punya bhakta raja-rshayas tatha, anityam asukham lokam imam prapya bhajasva mam

How much more then, righteous brahmanas and devoted royal sages — having obtained this impermanent and joyless world, engage in devotional service unto Me. If even those in lower positions can attain God, those born into righteous circumstances should certainly seize the opportunity for bhakti.

Key Teachings

  • This world is temporary and ultimately unsatisfying — turn to God
  • Those with favourable circumstances have even greater opportunity for devotion
  • Bhakti is the highest use of human life regardless of social position
Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru, mam evaisyasi yuktvaivam atmanam mat-parayanah

Always think of Me, be devoted to Me, worship Me, and bow down to Me. Uniting yourself with Me in this way, with Me as your supreme goal, you will certainly come to Me.

Key Teachings

  • Complete absorption in the divine
  • Four-fold practice: think, devote, worship, bow
  • Assurance of attaining God
