Kim punar brahmanah punya bhakta raja-rshayas tatha, anityam asukham lokam imam prapya bhajasva mam

How much more then, righteous brahmanas and devoted royal sages — having obtained this impermanent and joyless world, engage in devotional service unto Me. If even those in lower positions can attain God, those born into righteous circumstances should certainly seize the opportunity for bhakti.

  • This world is temporary and ultimately unsatisfying — turn to God
  • Those with favourable circumstances have even greater opportunity for devotion
  • Bhakti is the highest use of human life regardless of social position
brahmaṇa-kṣatriya-viśāṁ śūdrāṇāṁ ca paraṁtapa karmāṇi pravibhaktāni svabhāva-prabhavair guṇaiḥ

The duties of brahmanas, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras are distributed according to the qualities born from their own inner nature. The varna system as described here is grounded in svabhava — one's intrinsic temperament and qualities — rather than mere birth.

  • The four varnas have duties corresponding to their natural qualities
  • Svabhava — one's innate nature — determines the appropriate field of service
  • The guna-based understanding of varna transcends rigid hereditary interpretation
